So as we take a deeper look into soft contact lens history, it was in 1981 that the FDA approved soft contact lenses for overnight or what is known as extended wear lenses. In 1987, the introduction of the disposable soft contact lenses came about and in 1996 was the introduction of the daily disposable contact lens. Silicone hydrogel contact lenses made their debut to the market in 2002 and it was in 2010 that custom soft contact lenses became available as the perimeter of the lenses available grew. Silicone and hydrogel lenses are the two most basic types of contact lenses.
