History

I'd love to give you a little bit of a history lesson to start out. The earliest ideas of a contact lens date back to the 16th century, and sketches by Leonardo da Vinci. It’s incredible, right? And in 1887, the first designs were constructed of glass. In 1929, improvements were made when they were finally able to take molds of living eyes. In 1936, New York optometrist William Feinbloom produced the first contact made of plastic and glass. And in 1948, the first lens manufactured by California optician Kevin Tuohy, made entirely of a plastic called polymethyl methacrylate. 

Years were spent trying to make the lens comfortable enough to wear for a long period of time, and it wasn't until 23 years later that the first soft lens was officially available on the US market introduced by Bausch + Lomb.
