There are also other situations in which we may be able to disclose information without obtaining authorization. Some of these include Workers Compensation, law enforcement reasons, as well as victims of abuse, public health activities, or health oversight activities. Under the HIPAA Privacy Rule, organizations must obtain authorization if the purpose for use and disclosure does not fall under treatment, payment, or transfer of health care. These other types of activities include reasons for disclosure for purposes of psychotherapy notes, marketing, research, or fundraising purposes.
