Practice Safeguards and Notice of Privacy Practices Objectives

Welcome to our next course where we will begin discussing practice safeguards, as well as the Notice of Privacy Practices. The objectives of this course include discussing and understanding of administrative safeguards, physical safeguards, technical safeguards, and the requirements involved in sharing the Notice of Privacy Practices with your patients.

The HIPAA Security Rule became effective on April 20, 2005.  The Security Rule standards define how we as practices are to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of our patients’ electronic Protected Health Information or ePHI. The Security Rule requires that we have administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for protecting ePHI.

Now, the Privacy Rule standards require appropriate safeguards to be established within the practice to protect the privacy of personal health information and set limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without your patients’ authorization.
