After Check-In

Discuss with your doctor or office manager if there are any pretest instruments that need to be utilized for an emergency, urgent, or priority cases. Most cases involving visual acuity complaints will need an autorefraction measurement. ​

​Patient prep in the exam room may involve setting up for any procedure or evaluation the doctor may choose to do in the exam room.  Become familiar with the setup for different types of office visits at your office. For example, foreign body removal procedures that may require forceps, bandage contact lenses, and anesthetic drops.  Would you know where to find these items in your office per the request of your doctor? Is each exam room set up with items the doctor may need in an emergency situation? Prepping the exam room allows the doctor to become more efficient when working these patients into your day, as you and your team make an effort to stay on schedule. ​

​It is important to discuss with your doctor what information is most pertinent to them to know prior to walking into an exam room in an emergency and urgent situation. This helps the doctor assess symptoms as soon as possible, and aids in determining an evaluation and treatment plan. At your doctor's request this may be information they prefer to have upon the patients request for an appointment and prior to arrival at your office. ​
