CPT Modifiers

At times, you’re going to have to use what is called a CPT modifier and what a CPT modifier does is it indicates or provides additional information for a particular service or procedure or product being billed. Most common CPT modifiers that you will utilize will be for example RT for right eye or LT for left eye, which indicates which eye is services being provided for and billed. Additionally, there is the 55 modifiers, which indicates post-operative management care being performed by your Optometrist in conjunction with an Ophthalmologist who has performed a surgical procedure. The 55 indicates your doctor's, the Optometrist, post-operative management care. There's also a 24 modifier and this is important to utilize when there's an exam that's performed for form during the global period, that is unrelated to the surgical procedure and what is a global period? A global period Begins up to 24 hours before surgical procedure and it ends once that procedure is completed. Now please know that that period varies based upon the nature of the procedure. We also have procedure codes, we have contact lens evaluations, we have specialty fitting codes, but again your doctor will provide you with the appropriate billing CPT codes in diagnosis. I do recommend that you utilize a routing slip to ensure billing accuracy.
