Let’s review some patient responses, feedback and troubleshooting steps. Again, reminder, do not let the patient squint. Dry eye can account for some inconsistencies. Remember that women who are breastfeeding, may have fluctuating vision. For a patient who cannot see the big E, you may consider a walk-up method, at fifteen feet, ten feet, and five feet. Are they able to count fingers and report at what distance? Are they able to detect hand motion and what distance? Are they able to detect light and is there light perception?
Remember, with office visits, you may wonder, do I still need to take visual acuities and the answer is yes. Most office visits will be trauma, vision loss, red eyes, pathology, or contact lens exams as they are considered a medical device. We still need to take visual acuities on every patient, unless the patient is unable to keep their eyes open upon arrival.
